Prenatal Care
Prenatal care is the care that you get when you are pregnant. Call your doctor as
soon as you know you are pregnant. It is best to go to all your prenatal visits
with your doctor. Pregnant women need prenatal care. Studies show that pregnant
women who see their doctor on a regular basis have healthier babies.
During your prenatal visits, you will:
• Get information on prenatal care
• Learn about the best foods to eat while pregnant
• The doctor will check your pregnancy
• Learn about support services, like Healthy Start, WIC or childbirth
classes
WIC is a program for pregnant women or mothers with young children. WIC includes
healthy food, education and referrals for health care services. To apply for WIC:
If you have questions, write them down. Take them with you to your doctor's visit.
During your pregnancy, you should see your doctor:
• From week 4 to 28 - see your doctor every four weeks.
• From week 28-36 - see your doctor every two weeks.
• From week 36 to birth - see your doctor every week.
If you don't feel safe, tell your doctor about anything that could harm you or your
baby. Tell your doctor if you smoke, use alcohol, or take drugs. Tell your doctor
if your partner or anyone else hurts you. Your doctor may be able to help you.
